The String Band Spring Strut intended to give Philadelphians another chance to see bands that balked at marching in snow and rain in the 1989 New Year’s Day parade. The Mummers’ reluctance to get their plumes wet and Mayor Goode’s refusal to postpone the parade caused a lot of controversy and bad feelings.

The Spring Strut stepped off at Washington Avenue and ended just past Oregon Avenue, near Marconi Plaza.
KYW-TV broadcasted the parade from bleachers in front of Methodist Hospital, on Broad Street between Wolf and Ritner.
