Philadelphia Radio Legend Don Cannon Passed Away

Philadelphia radio legend Don Cannon passed away

Philadelphia radio legend Don Cannon passed away today at the age of 74. Don Cannon was known as “The Dean of Philadelphia Radio.” He was on morning radio in Philadelphia from 1969 until he retired in 2004. He was the first to play Al Alberts’ ” On the Way to Cape May” and continued playing it on WOGL every Friday in the summer. In the movie Rocky when Rocky’s morning alarm clock goes off, it’s the voice of Don Cannon that delivers his wake up call.

A native of Yonkers, Dominic “Don Cannon” Canzanzo was part of a singing group called The Dreamers in the late 1950s. He came to WDRC as the second all-night man (after Dik Haddad), but only stayed three months. Buckley Broadcasting transferred him to their station in Philadelphia, WIBG. Aside from some fill-in work in the New York market, Philadelphia has been his home ever since.

Here is a 104.5 WSNI commercial featuring Don Cannon that played during the 1987 Mummers Parade.
