Dear Mr. Mummer:
Stu is correct in what he had to say about social media outrage and how everything has become so sensitive. Just today I received a downloaded letter from a friend who copied it from Facebook. It involves Danielle Redden and The Vaudevillians NYB. In the letter she has posted on their Facebook page: facebook.com/vaudevilliansnyb, it states that drastic measures need to be taking towards future mummer parades. The actions she suggest are, in my opinion , way overboard for such a 100+ tradition gathering on New Years Day and what bothers me the most is that these are the new Philadelphians that are causing such a stir. (they do not embrace the history of the parade and in honesty they don’t care too — trust me — I know)
Danielle, from what I gather has only been part of the parade for a few years and she talks about tradition, but with her routine she does not take on the traditional mummer strut at the end of her performance/s for the judges. Shouldn’t she embrace the strut? She, like the rest of the newcomers moving to Philadelphia are not planning on staying here for very long; where us natives born, raised and die here live for N.Y.D. It’s ours and it’s our sanctuary for that one day of pride to be part of such an historical event. Though most new Philadelphians could care less and will eventually leave the city for the burbs or other cities and states, but before they do, they’ll destroy what is ours, what we were born into and how we work so hard to get that one day to let it all out and enjoy ourselves. But now we are caught up in the mix with people like Danielle and others who — like her — who insist it’s their right to change us and a Philadelphia tradition. This year every living/breathing mummer need to gather and discuss this issue before it ends the parade for good!
