As most of you know, Mummers start planning their themes early in the year. Ferko had settled on a Middle Eastern theme for the 2002 Mummers Parade, with numbers including “Dancing Sheik to Sheik. Then came Sept. 11 2001 and the theme was quickly scrapped for a cowboy motif.

“It’s like doing a tribute to the Japanese in 1941,” Anthony Celenza said of the original idea. “You just wouldn’t do that after Pearl Harbor. That just wouldn’t be right.”
